Zepparella

Zepparella

Drummer Clementine is the founding member of ZEPPARELLA. From the beginning of her musical career, her goal has been to be onstage every night. The pursuit of that goal has led Clementine to constantly tour the US and Europe in projects as diverse as Bottom, AC/DShe, The House Of More, The Solid, Francis Bakin, Stars Turn Me On and Beaux Cheveux. She tackles the best rock drumming ever written with her own emotionally powerful style, bringing the Motown influence of the Bonham groove to the forefront. The profound musical connection established with Gretchen Menn (guitar), Holly West (bass), and Anna Kristina (vocals) creates the bond required to do this great music justice.

It was under the tutelage of classical guitarist Phillip DeFremery, a student of Andrés Segovia, that guitarist Gretchen Menn began her path on the instrument. Playing with tireless passion and constantly seeking out new challenges, her projects are often unconventional, genre-bending expressions combining elements of classical, rock, progressive, jazz, and metal. On influences, Gretchen has never tired of her initial inspirations—Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, Frank Zappa, and Jeff Beck. But she has loved Jimmy Page’s guitar playing longer than she has played the guitar. It was through the music of Led Zeppelin that she found a gateway into music that resonated deeply with her, creating a love for guitar-oriented music, and, ultimately, the guitar.

Bassist Holly West began her musical journey full-steam ahead, and more recently than her stellar playing belies. Her unstoppable will and drive have truly propelled her to this moment and her place in the powerhouse Zepparella. A self-taught bass player, she is also a blossoming vocalist with rich rock pipes. Her time on stage has been well spent, developing an impressive attack, impeccable feel, and a technique which seems to have come completely naturally to her, not to mention her dazzling stage presence and joyful performance style. Her influences span the rock gauntlet, from Clutch and the Rival Sons to Slash, ZZ Top, and of course, the mighty Zeppelin.

Singer Anna Kristina is a soulful, fiery, and rocking vocal powerhouse who has stepped into Zepparella’s Plant spot for a second time. Anna was with the band for 5 years, became known for her performance in the band’s 15 million-view “When The Levee Breaks” video, took a 6-year hiatus, and now returns in 2018 to front the band. Her career has spanned acoustic, jazz, soul, rock, and her charisma and power delivers captivating performances every night. About her brilliant harp playing she says: “getting a chance to blow on the harmonica is an added bonus! Plant isn’t just a singer he’s a musician. He brings his blues background and natural percussive feel to his harmonica playing as well and I love getting lost in that. Playing the harp allows me to express on a whole different level and it’s so freeing.”

Now more than ever, Zepparella explores their own improvised magic within the framework of Zeppelin’s mighty songs! Click here for more information!

The Book Before The Big Feast @ Goldstein’s Mortuary & Delicatessen

Books, Beers, and Buddies-Where Book and Beer Lovers Unite!

Are you hungry for books AND beer? We see your head nodding. GREAT! Let’s be friends!

Our Mission: This is an SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) group for grown-ups! Remember in elementary school when you got 10 precious minutes each day to read whatever the heck you wanted? For fun?! Don’t you miss those days? Well, we’re here to support your childhood regression to elementary school and do just that! Together. Silently, but together. Kind of. We socialize first. It sounds complicated but it’s actually very simple. Just go grab that book you’ve been meaning to read and join us!

What to Expect: For the first half hour we just get situated and mingle. We talk about the books we brought to read, grab a beer, and just casually chit-chat. A book is a great conversation starter. At 2:30 we go silent to read independently. You get to enjoy some well-deserved quiet time with your book. (Books are great besties). Then at 4 we close our books, close our tabs and do it again the following month. Cheers! Hemingway would tell you to go because, well, there are books and beer. All the cool kids will be there. You should be too!

Los Lobos

Los Lobos

It’s a matter of time. 50 years to be exact. And in that time Los Lobos have created an unprecedented body of work, a legacy of greatness. The numbers are staggering: 100+ gigs a year for five decades running, crossing millions of miles to rock millions of fans. And that’s just at the live shows. In between they’ve recorded 17 studio albums, 7 live LPs, 3 compilations, 2 EPs, 2 DVDs, and contributed 40+ guest appearances on their friends’ recordings — all garnering 5 Grammys, an Austin City Limits Hall of Fame induction, the ALMA Richie Valens Pioneer Award, NEA and Hispanic Heritage Foundation Honors, Congressional recognitions, plus countless “Keys to the City” and “Los Lobos Day” celebrations. And those are just a few of the highlights. But beyond all the hoopla and applause (and the source of it all, really) is the tremendous heart. Rather, hearts. Cinco corazones. Five blood brothers who have dedicated their off-stage time to helping others, working for peace and justice, penning some of the most literate and important music of their time, transforming the hard cries from the East L.A. barrio into songs of hope, tales of common folk finding ways to endure. The young wolves were weaned on late-night radio’s soul, R&B, and doo-wop. Were cured through the African-American currents of the blues, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll. An amalgam. As proud Chicanos, their songs have always glistened with the distillation from their Mexican and Latin American roots — nourished by Norteña and rancheras, buoyed by bolero and cumbias, soaring on the rhythms of son huasteco and son jarocho. Los Lobos have helped spread the rich diversity of cultures across every continent, throughout the global community. Kids in Antwerp now know about Aztlán. Residents of Luxor and Ghana are crooning Lalo Guerrero. People from Laos and Bulgaria are belting “La Bamba” — all thanks to The Wolves as cultural ambassadors. Talk about a living legacy. Talk about a productive half century. And in the true rebel spirit, they did it all on their own terms, against formula. For the ages. To our delight. Quite simply, they are one of the tightest, one of the best, one of the most prolific bands ever. And, amazingly, with the original founding members as the pack the entire time. Unprecedented. As their liner notes put it, quite simply: “Los Lobos still are David Hidalgo, Louie Pérez, Jr., Cesar Rosas, Conrad Lozano, Steve Berlin.”

David Nail
Oct

David Nail

David Nail’s candor cuts like a laser through star-making propriety, a ritual of predictable answers to predictable questions, recited by artists averse to the controversy that truth can bring.

True, he is respected up and down and beyond Music Row. He’s written or co-written multiple hits. Critics laud his singing too: The late, revered Chuck Dauphin, for one, marveled at Nail’s ability to turn an “ordinary lyric and arrangement” into a “tour de force,” adding, “simply put… he is not one of us.”

So he’s got rock-solid credentials. And he earned them despite a refusal to present himself in a false light. His songs pull no punches in evoking the demons with which he has wrestled through much of his life. As Nail explains, it’s not so much an act of courage to write about depression and its effects. Rather, it is simply who he is; he says, in conversation and through music, what he must say. Click here for more information!

CARLOS BALLARTA: TLATOANI

Carlos Ballarta is a stand-up comedian and actor born in Mexico City in 1990. He was raised in Chicoloapan, a borough in the Metropolitan area, and studied acting. His artistic career started as a voice actor, and the first time he went on an Open mic was in 2012. He then started to wear glasses due to his fear of looking audiences in the eye, and this has become his signature look.

In 2014 he became a fan favorite with his debut Comedy Central Latam. Since then, he has taped three Netflix specials, and he has been touring around Mexico, Latin America, USA, Canada and Europe. He has also appeared on many films and TV shows, as an actor, comedian and voice actor, and this has positioned Carlos Ballarta as one of the most recognizable faces in the growing Spanish speaking Stand Up scene.

As father of two, Carlos is an advocate of diversity in the Mexican entertainment industry. His three stand up Netflix specials, El Amor es de Putos, Furia Ñera and Falso Profeta are a testimony of his beliefs. He likes to describe himself as not the best, but an intuitive artist, which is a nicer way to say he’s one lucky bastard.

This is a Spanish Language show.
